Why Sandy?

Some of us wondered why the water park is called, 'Sandy Water Park'?

Despite the next street being named Sandy Road and the more obvious reason of the area being near to the beach, we wondered about its roots.

Records show that on 28/29th July, 1843, Sandy Tollgate was destroyed by men, mostly farmers, who disagreed about paying the toll prices and did so dressed as women. The disturbances are today known as The Rebecca Riots.

Old maps of the area from 1880 show a mark for Sandy Turnpike in about the area where the roundabout is located today. Apparently, the turnpike would have had a view of the estuary in those days; land has since been reclaimed from the sea and moved back.

Old maps show that in 1907 a mark for Sandy Brick Works at about the location of Sandy Roundabout today.

In 1908 a company called Sandy Coal and Brick Company Ltd employed 50 people from that site.
