Sandy Toll Gate

On entering Sandy Water Park housing estate, from the main road or simply visiting The Sandpiper restaurant, you will have driven or walked around Sandy roundabout.  The roundabout was constructed during the regeneration of this area in the 1990s.

Sandy roundabout marks the beginning of Sandy Road as you move in a westerly direction from Llanelli Town Centre towards Pwll and Burry Port.  However, this was once the location for a tollgate.

On the north western corner of Sandy roundabout sit a number of cottages, where once stood Sandy Tollgate.

Sandy Tollgate was attacked and destroyed by  Rebecca and her Daughters in July 1843 as part of what is called The Rebecca Riots.

This is an artist's image of what Sandy Tollgate may have looked like in the 19th Century.

Notice how close the estuary is - this could be the reason for the area being known as Sandy.
