Do you remember when leading housing developers competed for a parcel of land along the Llanelli coastline?

The prime site at Sandy Water Park attracted massive interest from businessmen who visited the area in a marketing drive in 1997.

Helicopter flights took developers along the coastline to show off eight parcels of land earmarked for residential, commercial and leisure use.

But major housing chains showed the most iterest in the land under their feet at the reception marquee, filled with businessmen and guests on th edge of the lake at the water park.

Representatives of Bellway Homes, Wimpey, Bloor, Beazer and others all expressed a preference for the 7.62 acre site.

Bailey Homes had already built 123 houses at Sandy Water Park with plans for another 23. Demand in the area was very strong, with 120 homes already sold, the most popular being 3 to 4-bedroomed properties selling from £56,000 to £104,000.

Developers said they were attracted by a package of cheap land and cash incentives to build in the area. They also said it was one of the few sites where housing was booming and demand was was set to outstrip supply. Major developers also showed interest in building a hotel at the other side of the lake.

Leisure chiefs said it was prompted by an increasing number of tourists and visitors to the area.
